Last Autumn, latest Nelly Ben Hayoun Studios project, ‘I am (not) a Monster’, was exhibited at the 4th Istanbul Design Biennale, A School of Schools. Now, in the coming months, the exhibition will be travelling to Arles, France! The exhibition will take place from 02/05/2019 to 26/05/2019, at Parc des Ateliers, 45 Chemin des Minimes, 13200 Arles, France.
I am (not) a Monster synopsis- ‘To act is to begin something new’ said Hannah Arendt, one of the greatest thinkers of all time who passed away in 1975 and who coined the concept of the ‘banality of evil’. In this original film, learn about the thinking processes of activism and mechanisms of our risky thoughts. A most urgent film unravelling some of the reasons why Trump, Le Pen and others have captured people’s imaginations by reviving past ideologies. From dangerous plots to dangerous actions, you will hear about our collective fears both past and present but also encounter the contemporary monsters and actors of the future: the humanoids. Your guide in this adventurous journey is the alternative educator Nelly Ben Hayoun, who armed with puppets and dressed as Hannah Arendt, teases the greatest thinkers of our age whilst challenging them to an impossible pursuit; the search of the origins of knowledge.”
I am (not) a Monster will be released in Autumn 2019, so make sure you stay tuned.
A School of Schools is a multi-platform knowledge-based exhibition that uses, tests, and revises a variety of educational strategies. Curated by Jan Boelen — co-founding artistic director of the research program Atelier Luma — with Vera Sacchetti and Nadine Botha for the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, it presents the work of over 90 artists and designers from around the world.
A School of Schools is presented at Luma Arles as part of the Guest Program of Luma Days #3, a yearly forum of art and ideas, which takes place in Arles from May 22 to 25, 2019, and presents public events, conferences, professional workshops, displays and art installations. This year, the topic of the forum is: “TOGETHER, a declaration of interdependence”.
