On 12th June 2018, Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun and the design institute A/D/O will team up again to present the sixth in the series of monthly seminars: ‘TALK TO ME. I AM YOUR FRIEND; On animals, friendship and speech’.
Formula One driver Alain Prost was famous for his meticulous strategy while racing at the speed of light. He also entertained a friendship-rivalry with the driver Ayrton Senna who sadly died in a car accident as Alain was retiring. Is friendship always starting/ and/ or ending with a spark? This month at A/D/O we will explore the ultimate friendships, from passion to future robotic love and canine familiarity. We will study the languages of appreciation between Homo sapiens but also dogs and perhaps even dinosaurs.
The speakers at the June will include:
Paul Sahre (keynote), Graphic Designer. Sahre has operated his own practice since 1997. He is a frequent visual contributor to The New York Times; designed book covers for authors such as Chuck Klosterman, Malcolm Gladwell, Rick Moody, and Clarice Lispector; authored books; and built and destroyed a life-sized monster truck hearse for the band They Might Be Giants. Paul received his BFA and MFA from Kent State University and has taught graphic design at the School of Visual Arts for the past 13 years. He lectures extensively all over the world and is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale.
Lauren Novack – Associate Certified Dog Behavior Consultant and Founder of Lauren’s Leash.
Nandini Thiyagarajan – a Faculty Fellow in the Animal Studies Initiative at New York University.
Ryan and Trevor Oakes – Artists and twin brother collaborators
‘Homo Sapiens I Hear You’ is a series of non-linear, non-conventional, and non-passive seminars which question and re-think humanity’s essential needs; and consider whether the modern practice of design addresses them.
The curriculum conceived by Nelly Ben Hayoun is framed around American psychologist Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs”, which offers a model that defines the needs of human beings – from the most basic functions (eating, sleeping, etc.) to the more fulfilling (self-improvement, practicing sports, etc.). Our seminars will unravel how human needs have developed through history and how they might continue to develop over time.
Occurring on the 12th of the month, each seminar will showcase pioneering critical thinkers and present eclectic reference material from around the world. Dr. Ben Hayoun, along with a rotating cast of visiting faculty will facilitate a series of activities, workshops and debates. The series of seminars will be accompanied with: podcasts by Elle Clay, editorial pieces by Cabinet Magazine and Our Machine’s graphics.
