On 12th April 2018, Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun and the design institute A/D/O will team up again to present the forth in the series of monthly seminars: ‘FIRE IN MY EYES; On catastrophe, electricity and disaster management.‘.
At the April seminar, you will experience a burning blaze before their very eyes. We will take you on a journey investigating emergency procedures, thrill design and more. Together we will explore disaster scenarios while manufacturing the near death experiences and techno-catastrophes. Who are the masterminds behind the plan B, C and D, who answers the red phone in mission control? Let’s discover it while learning from experts on disaster management, firefighters and designers.
This month, we are red, orange and yellow: this month…. we have fire for your eyes, let’s dig deep and learn from the flint we find!
The panelists at the April seminar will include:
Brendan Walker – Technology-inspired performance artist described by The Times as “the world’s only Thrill Engineer.”
Regina Wilson – Firefighter for the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) and President of the Volcan Society
Mustafaa Shakur – Program Supervisor at Rock Safe Streets, organisation which “cures violence” through prevention, mediation, advocacy, and education
‘Homo Sapiens I Hear You’ is a series of non-linear, non-conventional, and non-passive seminars which question and re-think humanity’s essential needs; and consider whether the modern practice of design addresses them.
The curriculum conceived by Nelly Ben Hayoun is framed around American psychologist Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs”, which offers a model that defines the needs of human beings – from the most basic functions (eating, sleeping, etc.) to the more fulfilling (self-improvement, practicing sports, etc.). Our seminars will unravel how human needs have developed through history and how they might continue to develop over time.
Occurring on the 12th of the month, each seminar will showcase pioneering critical thinkers and present eclectic reference material from around the world. Dr. Ben Hayoun, along with a rotating cast of visiting faculty will facilitate a series of activities, workshops and debates. The series of seminars will be accompanied with: podcasts by Elle Clay, editorial pieces by Cabinet Magazine and Our Machine’s graphics.
