In November, Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun will be taking to the stage (twice) at KIKK Festival of Digital & Creative Cultures in Namur, Belgium. The theme of KIKK this year is “Species and the Beyond” whereby the intention is to explore the boundaries between the living and the non-living, undoing our anthropocentric visions of the world by shifting points of view. Faced with global issues, the contemporary perception has evolved, artists and philosophers are rethinking and decentering humans’ position in the world which has been dominant in modern thinking. New questions arise. What can be defined as a species? What happens when we look at the world from another position, taking the perspective of animals, plants, bacteria, minerals, the forces of the elements?

To tackle the questions above, on 1st November 2018 Nelly will lead a masterclass on EVILS AND MONSTERS! THE ACT OF THINKING!

This class investigates contemporary semiotics and mythological accounts of history and collective fears as a creative framework for design and experiential practices (film, music, architecture). Using the texts of political theorist Hannah Arendt as a framework, participants are tasked to identify systems of meaning, narrative figures and technological collective fears (such as Grey goo for example) at the start of their designed experience and theatrical re-enactments. They are mixed in groups with which they create monsters and engage in performing re-enactments that they both select, script, design and perform as a result of their research.

The class will be held at the Palais des congrès 10:00 – 12:00. For more information and tickets, click here!

KIKK was founded in 2011 and is a non-profit association that promotes digital and creative cultures. Their aim is to create bridges between art, culture, science, and technology through the organization of the event and educational projects as well as the production of artworks and support to creative projects.
